Who Am I by Greg McGrory

WHO AM I? is a personal question to which the answer is often connected to what one does rather than to who one is. May I suggest that time be found to sit in the profound mystery of who you are. You may not understand this mystery, may even be afraid to confront the truth of who you are. On the other hand, you may be eager to explore and acknowledge the question, to enter that sacred place, the sanctuary of your soul where God rejoices in who you are. That inner room where the God who created you, loves you, has chosen you, desires you to rejoice in who you are.
To ask, WHO AM I ? is an exploration to be honoured and begins with your story which will involve life’s experiences, lessons learnt, memories positive and negative, people met, reactions to various circumstances and what it is you desire and why.
Your story is far from ordinary and to be honoured, needs a willingness to be totally truthful with self, neither over praising nor berating yourself as worthless. Couple that with allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth. It is not about seeking a spiritual elitism, but acknowledging the real you, beloved of God no matter what. It’s about accepting that you are part of the great mystery into which we all have been created.
Once you stop seeing yourself as part of the mystery you lose hold of the truth. Once you confuse function with the true self you live an illusion. It’s bad enough living with other people’s perception of who you are, perceptions at times far from the truth and at times painfully close. It’s bad enough living as other people’s illusions as they confuse function with true self. Far worse to hide one’s true self to fulfil their illusion and perception.
This Lent season is a good time to begin the exploration but then so is Easter, so is Pentecost. WHO AM I in the wilderness and temptation times? WHO AM I in the times of victory and resurrection times? WHO AM I in the Spirit led and fulfilled times? Explore the true self and be of great courage for God is with you, blessing you for who you are and may your true self be a blessing to others.
